In tricky cases, you can send up to four photos. You’ll get one or more suggestions as a result, along with the confidence level of the identification—for practically any living thing.
At the same time, your field observations help scientists keep an eye on biodiversity.

Also good: NaturaDB.
Especially if you want to catalogue the plant species in your garden. Because in this app, you can organize the species you find into lists.

If you prefer flipping through books, you’ll find something suitable there, too. For example, there are guides for identifying flowering plants that are organized by color and number of petals—rather than by order and family.

There are also works like this for fungi and lichens, structured around easy-to-recognize features.

If, for example, you want to identify bumblebees, you can now find very good identification keys online for telling the species apart.

In other words: these days, curious beginners have all sorts of easily accessible sources and tools.

And once a species has been identified, there’s a wealth to discover and learn about it.

A whole new world of wonders opens up!
Spiders that carry their young on their backs—or even feed them. How much soil a single worm improves. How many wild bees we have here…
Let yourself be surprised!

A special appeal of nature-focused photography: the unknown—and how you get to know it.
