Grannies Against the Right

Watercolor illustration shows a group of elderly ladies with kitchen tools like brooms and pans in a combative pose. Colorful

Today I ran into some Grannies Against the Right. In a department store. Two completely normal people with a “Grannies Against the Right” button on their chests.

Maybe I’m just imagining it—the encounter was brief. But they radiated determination. It was clear: wearing that button was a conscious decision.

The encounter stayed with me…

I wonder if I would wear a button like that. And although I always take a stand against the right whenever the opportunity arises: no.
To position myself against the right in front of anonymous right-wingers and thus not only encourage others but also provoke… I lack the courage for that.

I am all the more impressed by it.

I wish all the more for myself—and for all of us—more moral courage.
